Man, that felt good.

I performed on Sunday.

it was just the two of us, vocals and a clean electric guitar. I was determined to reinvent myself and push myself into my rock star training head-on. Instead of bowing down to the venue and inciting confusion in potential fans, I decided to present the real me: black skirt, red halter top, and Doc Martens in the South Florida heat.

Usually, when an acoustic duo or trio opportunity presented itself, I shied away from a rock star persona and wore frilly skirts reminiscent of a coffeeshop open-mic night. Anyone visiting my MySpace thereafter was presented with exactly the opposite.

While getting dressed, something inside me said, “Fuck that,” and I put on my traditional “war paint” and rock clothes. I felt much better, but the sweat forming along my brow begged to differ. Luckily, there was a breeze the entire time, although it blew my hair into my face. Better that than a dead, moist heat sitting on top of my chest the entire time.

This entire thing was done as a sort of trial. It wasn’t heavily promoted. We just wanted to check it out and see what the vibe was. The venue itself was very promising. It’s a circle in downtown Hollywood. They have a couple of fountains, a small playground, a place to showcase art, and there’s a stage set up pretty much all the time.

We, of course, weren’t on it. We performed under a streetlight with Evan’s small sound system. It didn’t necessarily look like we had been hired by a large booking agency to be there, but maybe that was the idea, to make art accessible and unexpected. The performance is part of a program called “Art Attack,” in which every weekend afternoon/evening features something different. I’m happy to be a part of it, and it’s cool to see South Florida become slightly more cosmopolitan and local arts-friendly.

As for the performance? We did fairly well. Three 30-minute sets, some originals, mostly covers. I hadn’t sung for that long in ages, so my voice wasn’t able to quite hit the low notes towards the end of the last set. Evan and I sang our duet, and Evan even had a lead vocal role in a John Mayer cover—it was rusty, considering we had decided to perform that song not half an hour earlier. It wasn’t entirely bad.

Many people walked by and chose to stay for a tune. Many families were there, and couples walking their dogs. My love for Boston Terriers was cemented that night. They’re just too damn cute.

Overall, I was pleased with the whole performance. A couple of missed lyrics here and there, but nothing I couldn’t patch up on the fly.

I can’t wait to do it again on June 22nd.
